Special Guest Speaker: Larry Sand President, California Teachers Empowerment Network

Topic: CRT and School Choice

Mr. Sand, a former classroom teacher, is one of the most powerful voices in the educational world today. His nonprofit CTEN is dedicated to providing teachers witth reliable and balanced information about educational issues --- information teachers will often not get from their districts or unions. In 2011, CTEN expanded its mission to help the general public understand the array of educational issues facing our country today. Mr. Sand’s op-eds have appeared in Associated Press, Wall Street Journal, Real Clear Politics, The Weekly Standard, Sacramento Bee, Newsweek, and numerous other publicans. He has blogged at Union Watch since 2010 and in May 2011 became a regular contributor to City Journal, the Manhattan Institute’s policy publication. Mr. Sand has appeared on numerous broadcast news programs and talk radio shows in Southern California and nationally.

Topic: The Homeless Crisis: Causes and Solutions

Ms. Theroux is Senior Vice President of the Independent Institute in Oakland, a non-profit, non-partisan, public-policy research and educational organization that shapes ideas into profound (and lasting) impact through publications, conferences, and multi-media programs. In conjunction with its Fellows, the Independent Institute publishes studies which are widely distributed as books, articles, and other publications. Ms. Theroux, the Managing Director of a Bay Area investment firm, is also former Chairman of the Advisory Board for the Alameda County Salvation Army; she also serves on the National Advisory Board of the Salvation Army. Her articles have appeared in Forbes, Huffington Post, San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Examiner, Visión Hispana, Houston Business Journal, Washington Examiner, San Francisco Business Times, etc. Ms. Theroux has recently finished production of a documentary about homelessness.

Mr. Wickers is the Vice President of Operations at Freedom Foundation, a national non-profit think tank with offices in Washington, Oregon, Ohio, Pennsylvania and California. Founded in 1991 by Bob Williams and Lynn Harsh as the Evergreen Freedom Foundation, today the Freedom Foundation is a national leader in winning the fight for freedom at the state and local level. Mr. Wickers has worked at the highest levels of U.S. presidential, senate, and gubernatorial campaigns. In 2012 he served as sernior advisor and media consultant to Mitt Romney’s primary and general election campaigns. Mr. Wickers actually began his career on the staff of former U.S. Senator Pete Wilson and as a consultant to the California Senate Republican Caucus.

Honoring his term limits pledge of three terms, Mr. Ose did not run for reelection, and instead returned to Sacramento and went back into private business. Mr. Ose holds a degree in Business Administration from UC Berkeley.

Peter Kuo was born in Taiwan. He immigrated to the United States with his family when he was 14 years old. He eventually became a U.S. citizen after patiently going through the proper naturalization process. In addition to being Vice Chair of the California Republican Party, Peter is also an insurance agent, an entrepreneur, a business consultant, and a venture capitalist.
